I started out on a wysiwyg editor thinking it would be easier (admittedly it
was FP express). But I felt awkward because it gives you little insight into
what was happening.
I used notepad for my first few sites which was fine on that scale, but for
convenience and feature packedness (not a word!) i now use NoteTab
http://www.notetab.com
For offline validation purposes, I use HTML kit (i found it under w3
downloads).
Get yourself a decent tag reference book (paper will never replace computer)
HTML Programmers' Reference then away you go.
I found manual coding difficult and slow at first, but in the long run you
will reap the rewards. I am probably able to use a text-based editor far
faster than I would a visual tool. It gives me more flexibility.
Now I write HTML like second nature - i find myself typing center instead of
the correct UK spelling centre - that's the only downside I can find <grin>.
For the visual elements such as table creation and alignment, visual would
probably be loads better - but they both do the job and at different prices.

I have no complaints about manual coding - if I had it would be a completely
different story.
