Tables are mad in NN

Same old story I'm afraid. Yet another NN viewing problem.
On my site, I have a background creating the columns instead of table
borders.
I therefore align the table containing my text, inline with the borders of
the background. The problem is, I get it all lined up in IE (5). Then check
in NN and it is a disaster zone.
I want the menu to be ONLY in the grey section. The white section of the
background should only have the page content. The blue section to the right,
is to make up the difference in resolutions without creating a horizontal
scroll bar.
What happens in NN is that it seems to ignore the width attribute of the
table data element of the menubar (presumably because there is all that
spare blue part on the right to fill).
What makes matters worse, is that on the far left before the grey menu bit,
I have made a 3px wide blue section for design effect.
Really you'll have to look at the source and the background. I've left the
table borders in so you can see what's going on.

NN also renders the page with an annoying space at the top of the page above
the table revealing the white background underneath the table. Padding is
set to zero in the external style sheet (I'll validate that easy so no
criticisms http://www.thenetzone.co.uk/main.css ).

The page in question is at http://www.thenetzone.co.uk/main.html
I wouldn't mind any comments about my first ever Flash attempt at
http://www.thenetzone.co.uk (but of course don't jam the list 'bandwidth'
with loads of compliments :)

Basically: is there a way to ENFORCE NN to follow the widths of the table
data elements - like absolute width definitions?

I would prefer not to go to frames or have different whole sites for
different resolutions. But any suggestions are welcome.

Thankyou and sorry for the long posting (I beg forgiveness)
