OT- previews

Hi

I am having a problem that is slowing me down.  Its not exactly web design
but it is graphical.  I have always been able to see a preview of a graphic
in windows explorer since I got windows 98.  Its a really helpful feature
when looking for an image.  All of a sudden, one day without warning, it
left.  I can still see .tif files but not jpgs which are far more important.
I can also see html files.
I spent days seeing if I could change file associations but nothing helped.
Does anyone know what could have happened to make my previews disappear
