what if you;re not on a UNIX server? Isn't SSI done only in UNIX?

Hmmm....   not sure this is a good answer.  Depending on who's estimate you
believe - anywhere from 4% to 15% of the folks have JavaScript turned off.
That means using JS is a poor option for doing what she wants.

SSI is better since the server handles the parsing of the files rather than
depending on the viewers browser which could be any of several versions of
30+ browsers out there.
