Is there a better option than tables for formatting text......?

Hi,

I have a website that deals mainly with statistics which I have laid out in
tables, but they are a real pain in butt. I spend literally hours trying to
get the rows and columns to appear the way I need them, and I'm sure I've
got so much extra code than is needed trying to accomplish this. Is there a
better way than doing this, or an easy way to make tables work? Note that I
am using nested tables as I need the stats to be over-layed over a graphic.
