Morning Everyone:

In reviewing the email que when I came to work this morning I noticed
someone asked us about the grey vertical lines (aka VR's) used in the
newspaper column URL's we posted with our reply yesterday regarding
newspaper column formats.

More specifically, we were asked about the creation of those lines appearing
in the Dallas Morning News site (http://www.dallasnews.com).

Since the que has been purged and I cannot look up who it was that asked,
I'm posting this general reply in the hopes it'll get to the right party.

Those VR's used in the Dallas Morning News site are very simple to create
and are really cool. Those particular ones are only 40 x 3 GIF's flood-filed
grey and (in that instance) placed as the BG for the <td> tag.

We use these types of images in-house in all projects calling for VR's. They
can be flood-filled any color and we usually make them 1 x 1 GIF's and then
simply alter the sizing to fit the need.

For HR's we use the simple "<hr noshade size=1 width=XX>" tag for default
grey. If we want color we'll do the 1 x 1 thing and fill it with whatever
color we want to use.

For example, in our SWD site makeover we are working on we are using these
grey GIF's in size 1 x 1 as the VR's and the HR tag for default grey. They
work very well and can be sized easily. When we release our new site on
January 1, 2000 you'll see what I mean.

Hope this helped whomever was aksing.
