Am I doing this correctly?

Hi Folks:

First time posting and I'm not even sure if the question is right for the
list.

Site files are set up for xhtml 1.0 strict and appear to have passed muster
with the w3c validator.

The <script> tag reads as:

<script
 type="text/javascript"
 src="moddate.js"
 xml:space="preserve">
</script>

The file referenced is just a one-liner reading as:

document.write("This page last modified on " + document.lastModified)

It seems to work as intended, but then I can only test on one browser. Am I
doing this properly?

Part two of this question is about calling an external function.
Specifically,
passing a URL to a function using open.window() to show the new location. I
have two examples of the needed function, one calling from href and the
other
from onclick, but both assume the function is defined in the html file. How
would I play it to use an external script file in the same way as the
example
above?

TIA for any help offered or direction given.
