It is amazing how quickly we went from the subject of Netscape 6 messing up
a computer to our age old round-and-round over what the "ideal" "academic"
world of web coding "should" be.

Just like Fuzzy, I'm tempted--never could display will power--to jump on one
of MY favorite bandwagons here and with palms held upward,
interrupt this to ask the discussionee's, "Whats the point?"

It was just said by someone:
" ...
>NN6 and Opera 5 are the future of web. Coding by standards and not >by
browsers. ..."

Well--that's a fine and desirable goal. And one we all--no doubt--applaud.
But - - IS IT REALISTIC??

Certainly Netscape 6 --in it's form at present--is no ones future. Opera 5??
Well--maybe ??

In a perfect world--like the one envisioned in Star Trek this might be the
case. But NOT in the world we live in at present. Right now we are not
dealing with perfection. We are dealing with the low down dirty world of
crass comercialism. And thousands upon thosands of web sites are being
turned out ever week with the thought of attacting and holding the short
attention spans of the current rock listening generation.

Glitz and glitter are the norm. Well coded pages are left to the hallowed
halls of academia. JavaScript and Flash are everywhere -- and every day ...
day by day... WYSIWYG editors take over an increasing large portion of site
development.

And the almost total and unanamous number of this type of site, is designed
for the one browser that represents the current state of the art ---
Internet Explorer 5. Let me repeat--CURRENT state of the art that is in
use--right now--by real people--not some "idea" that should have been.

Do the good folks at Madison Avenue give a good rats that a tiny portion of
web surfers cannot "see" the Flash and Glitz?? Of course not. They are
designing their sites to attract and hold the millions--not the few hundred
or even few thousand still left behind.

And don't give me that bull about people using computers at work where they
are stuck with yesterday's technolegy. If they are working for a boss or CEO
so stupid as not to realize that if they don't upgrade, then their
compitition will---well then, it may be time to look for a more stable
source of income.

We could all have a set "standard" right now if we really wanted that. After
all, it really does not matter a whit WHAT standard it is. All we have to do
is stop bickering and start placing a notice on all our sites that the site
is designed for IE-5+ and offer a link to download. Then code our sites for
the most popular browser in the world--IE-5+ -- and never look back. We can
worry about the future when it finally comes.

If you feel you have to, you can offer an explanination that if the viewer
does not use IE-5 they will miss out on features, (including links), not
only on your site but on thousands of other sites as well. Then repeat the
link to download IE-5.5.

Why IE-5?? Simple. It's the most popular. It supports the most features and
even comes on all the new computers. And--does anyone SERIOUSLY think the
real world out there will ever adopt Opera?? Come on now.

I leave you now to go rummage through the closet to see if I still have a
set of fireman's turn-outs left from my law enforcement cross training. I
suspect I'm going to need them.

Best wishes
