Java Applets Work in IE?

Hi All,
I am testing out a trial dl'd of a java applet navigation maker
I can view the browser preview  of the work in NN3 but nothing shows in
IE5(my browser of choice)
 The software developers claim that it will show in IE3+ and above
Is there something on my computer that i need to change to allow the IE5
browser to co operate or ????
