Actually, I think the list is the best and most appropriate place for a
message like this. I think one general message to everyone who responded to
a particular question is (1) a good way of letting everyone know that their
responses were received and not written off as so much trash, (2) informs
the list that the problem was solved, and (3) it's just plain polite.

The day when a simple "Thank you" is considered bothersome is the day I look
elsewhere for interaction.
