I've just had an experience where Chris' observation was correct.

Validation indicated 12 mistakes in my coding.  As I looked at my code, the
items were not errors under html 4.0 transitional DTD doctype.  So I started
from the top reading each line in detail.

In the line where I specified my stylesheet, I had left out the "=" sign in
my type description, fixed it, re-validated and no errors were found.
