So long as there are other platforms besides Windows and other browsers
besides IE, we who build and maintain web-sites are going to have to take
that into consideration. The question then becomes one of "Is it worth the
effort to make this site completely compatible with any browser on any
platform?" I am no expert on this, but I hazard that the cost of building
and maintaining such a site would be prohibitive. Where do you draw the
line?

There have long been differences between NN and IE (just to name the big
two). At work, we have some sites that **cannot** be accessed with IE due to
the way it handles (or doesn't) proxies and autoconfig. OTOH, we also have
other sites which load MUCH MUCH faster with IE than NN.

A basic principle of business is that time=money. If it takes 10 minutes for
a site to load in NN, but 5 for it to load in IE... guess which one is going
to be used whenever possible? I keep NN around solely to go to the sites
which require it at work.

I sort of know what CSS is, but don't use it. I don't know what a "layer"
is. ASP I've heard of. I don't know what a doctype is. I'm a big fan of the
KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!). The idea of putting in proprietary
code for the sake of glitz and glitter raises big red flags.

Will one of you folks please explain what a doctype is?
