No, you should not ignore it. ALT is a very

   <important>IMPORTANT</important>

attribute of IMG tag. Never never never miss it. Make it a religion to
put the "height", "width" and "alt" attributes with the "img". :)

BTW, I use the following in cases like these

    alt=" "
