Personal opinion here, Sherill. :-)

I use Arachnophilia, a lovely little text editor available at
http://www.arachnoid.com/ - no cash required, it's "careware" - the concept
is explained on the website.

What do I like about it?

--- I can have as many files open at the same time as I need, and they can
be as big or small as required (within the limits only of the amount of
memory available on my PC).

--- I can "search and replace" across all currently open files in one
action.

--- It has infinately customisable toolbars - I can use the ones provided,
customise them, create my own, have as many as I wish. I can quickly set
up tools and macros to do complex bits and pieces that will save me a lot
of typing. In fact these toolbars and tools can be simple commands or can
be set up like macros and can also be set up as libraries of code segments
that you use regularly - one click to insert rather than typing the same
code in every time.

--- It has time-saving TABLE and LIST wizards.

--- It will convert RTF files to HTML - usually needs some editing
afterwards, but it beats starting from scratch. :-)

--- It offers file selection dialogs to insert images and links to other
files - again, I don't need to type all the code in every time.

--- I can set up standard HTML templates that start HTML files off with
what I want in them already there.

--- It colours the HTML code so I can see what are elements, attributes,
values, text, etc, and when the colours go crazy I know I've made a mistake
somewhere. :-)

--- It'll also handle straight text files and other text/code files - all
of the features work just as well with CSS and other scripts/codes as they
do with HTML.

There are other text based editors out there that do all of these things
too, and the program has its little quirks (eg the colouring can go a bit
haywire when you're viewing a file with Javascript or CSS as well as HTML,
but only when both Javascript/CSS and HTML are visible on the screen).
However I just happen to like Arachnophilia. The features I've listed are
all reasons why I wouldn't go back to using Notepad - I only use it if I
have to do a few tweaks to a file on someone else's PC.

Regards,
Donna
