Two options:

One is to use either of the following (standard) character references:

&#189;  or &frac12;

In case these actually show up as the character on your email reader, here's
what they look like (delete the spaces in-between):

& # 189 ;   or  & frac12 ;

The other way is to put the 1 as a superscript, the slash as normal and the
2 as a subscript (remove the dots in your actual code) - if too large, embed
the 1 and the 2 within <.small> </small>

<.sup>1<./sup>/<.sub>2<./sub>
