Square one??

Perl: Programming Perl, Larry Wall, et al. There are some other books
that go with it: Perl Cookbook and also Learning Perl (companion volume
to Programming Perl).

However, these are pretty dense reading, though if you are going to be
doing any significant programming in Perl, they are a must.

I USED to love a book called CGI Programming with Perl 5 in a Week by
Eric Herrmann, but it is out of print. Not a definitive volume by any
means, but by following his example, as unsophisitcated as they were, I
finally was able to tie together the understanding of Perl from the
O'Reilly books with practical application of the language. You can find
copies of it used at places like barnes and noble (www.bn.com).

Glaggg!!! Just realized that the book was published in 1996. I feel old.

However, there are probably other good howto's on this subject. I do
recommend that one pursue both an understanding and a howto track with
perl.

For SSI, that is something that you will normally find in books about
web servers, the most popular being the Apache web server. A good book
about this is Administering Apache, Mark Arnold, et.al. It also has a
section about Perl/CGI programming and many other issues that relate to
server side programming and management.

For PHP, there is some true and total absolute "crud" out there. I have
found Professional PHP to be excellent. I have heard just as good of
reports about Beginning PHP. Both are by Wrox press. I never needed the
Beginning book since I started using PHP before there were any books out
there on the subject.

I would recommend that you install a web server onto your home computer.
Something like Apache since that is the most common. There are versions
out there for windows, though most of the documentation for Perl/CGI,
PHP and SSI is slanted towards UNIX/Linux operating systems.

A LOT, I mean A WHOLE LOT of the behavior of how much functionality and
the behavior of Perl/CGI, SSI and PHP is heavily dependent upon the web
server configuration.

I just remembered that I was going to email the group and ask for some
book suggestions to put on my Christmas Wish List. I am interested in
learning Perl, SSI, and PHP down the road, but need books/learning tools
that are laid out in an easy to follow format. My understanding of
server side technology is limited, so I need something that starts out
at square one.
