No problem in Explorer but Netscape won't show it the same width as
Explorer.

I just got through trying it in Mozilla 1.0 (Windows and Linux),
Netscape 6.2, Konqueror, and Opera and it works with all of these using
CSS -->

<img src="side.png">
<!input type="TEXT" name="doda" style="width: 125px;">

Note: The image side.png is 124 X 256 pixels.

The thing is that these display the text field exactly as the CSS says
that it should be displayed.

I noticed that in Internet Explorer 6.0, in the OS display setting where
I have large fonts selected as Windows default, the text field is a
little wider than the graphic. With the OS display set to small fonts,
it is a little smaller than the graphic.

With Mozilla 1.0, it seems to work correctly no matter what type of
fonts I had as the Windows default.

So, it doesn't work using CSS with MSIE 5.0, 5.5 or 6.0 browsers for
Windows OR Netscape 4.7x

I would suggest doing what a lot of sites do, which is NOT put text
field in a form that HAS to be 125 pixels across. I think more than
anything that is the reason that Search text fields on so many search
sites is in a place where it can be larger or smaller without affecting
the layout of everything else, which seems to be, at least for MSIE or
NS 4.7, more controlable.

Since MSIE 5, 5.5 and 6.0 get "close enough" and Netscape 4.7x is almost
off the radar, I would just accept the fact that you can get it within a
range of a few pixels.

Thanks much for your question. I spent some time testing this out
tonight, and I'm firmly convinced now that for the future I will disuade
customers from a desire to pixel perfect text boxes and forms. Of course
the next one that comes in will probably have a Vulcan Mind Meld onto
the idea that THEIR text box has to be 139.3345 pixels, and must have
the cursor sparkle like a red, white and blue shooting star when there
is a mouseover event.

later...
