Hi Folks:

Critics Force Microsoft To Drop Smart Tags
By Daniel F. DeLong, www.NewsFactor.com

Reacting to a growing chorus of criticism, software giant Microsoft is
dropping plans to put the controversial Smart Tags feature in its Windows XP
operating system, scheduled for release this fall.

While the Redmond, Washington-based firm didn't say the move was aimed at
appeasing critics, a published report quoted a company executive as saying
that Microsoft had not "balanced the legitimate concerns of the content
providers" with the benefits of the technology.

The report said the technology is being cut from the final operating system
package, scheduled for an October 25th release, specifically from its new Web
browser, Internet Explorer 6.

But the company reiterated that Smart Tags will remain a feature of Office
XP, the company's upgrade to its suite of productivity applications that was
introduced on May 31st.
