format of forms in IE

ive been having troubling trying to format the size of text boxes in a form 
im doing for a site. i noticed that the size can be manipulated in Netscape 
to look smaller or bigger using the FONT tag  but in IE it always appears as 
SIZE=3. ive even tried using CSS to set INPUT as a {font-size: 10px;} to try 
to manipulate the size but it doesnt work. any ideas? thanks
