Two good reasons to join the Guild:

They offer a lot of very good online classes, with discounts for Guild
members. One class or two and the discounts will easily cover the $40.

Guilds have a long and storied history. They were formed for the mutual
benefit and protection of its members and for the promotion and
maintenance of standards which benefit all members and those who will
use the guild members' products. The HTML Writers Guild is no exception
to this. By joining, you become a member of an organization whose
existence benefits you and your fellow artisans and professionals.

I happen to think that it is very cool to be a member of a guild. It
makes me feel like a 17th century goldsmith. :-)
