As a Digest subscriber, this is a little late. Sorry.
I think Flash is a great program too and can't wait to
take the class this fall. Have one teacher who is very
good in Flash and taught me Dreamweaver as well. The
new news on the web is one of accessibility to the
disabled and Flash is at the BOTTOM of the list for
those people. The standards do and should apply here,
I believe.

My other teacher, the HTML purist, using BBEdit for
two semesters, CSS only, validators, download speeds,
accessibility is great too, but I have to admit that
there is power in the quick downloads of HTML and
XHTML if you know what you're doing.

I also disagree with the statement that Flash is
necessary as an attention getter. That is why
designers take layout classes to learn how to create
dominace, eyepath, contrast, repetition, proximity,
tools, etc. Color theory and mastering typography also
come into big play here. I have seen many a static
site (with necessary minimum JavaScript), that are
more effective in leading the human eye to the focal
point than most ActionScript sites, by far. I admit,
there are some nice Flash sites, but very few that are
designed for quick and easy navigation.

Still can't wait to learn Flash, however.
