Graphic De . . . doggie<OT>

I have this image as a 300dpi .psd (4.X) file also:

I need it "one color" (black) for an event t-shirt.

I'm ok with that. Right up until I get to the gray part. When I nuke the
gray, my cute little doggy turns to a blob of yuck - even at 300 dpi,
whether I turn the gray white or black.
