I don't get it.

Wouldn't it be easier/better just to use real live ratified code and not
have to worry about browser compatibility?

(With the obvious exception of CSS. That will be a sore spot for a long
time to come, I fear.)

Instituting this with the customer has proven (at least in my shop) to be
as simple as:

Customer: We want **** effect thingy, its CUTE/Pretty/Cool!
Fuzzy: OK. No problem. Sign this form releasing me from responsibility for
the files functionality because this DOES render the file unreliable and
unpredictable. I can PROMISE you that at the very least many, many, many
people will have problems with the page because of that . . . effect.

Customer: HUH? Release you from your responsibility because of a ****
effect ?!?!?!?!
Fuzzy: YES. Look here: <Fuzzy takes them to the w3 site and the hwg site
and shows them where it says ANY non ratified code (or mistakes in the
code) render the page unreliable and unpredictable.>

Customer: Wow. I had no idea. Forget the **** stuff! We need this page to
work for *everyone* who visits us!!!!
Fuzzy: Wise choice, Boss.

As a personal observation it seems to me like 'we' spend a disproportionate
amount of time and effort trying to make something that can not ~ever~ work
reliably and predictably . . . work anyway.

I guess I'm just simple minded, but it seems to me that it would make a
*lot* more sense to NOT just "give in" and accept MSIE as "the" standard.
>From my (admittedly) warped perspective, it is that attitude that has
gotten 'us' in this fix in the first place (having to do contortions to
make our customers happy trying to make this "special" stuff work).

FWIW,
Fuzzy
<the simple minded professor?>
