That is because support on the web for png is even worse than for CSS . . .
which is pretty darned bad.
It seems to be that "good idea"/"bad idea" thing. The better a given idea
is, the slower it is to be implemented and supported by web browsers. Come
up with something stupid, and they'll make a special release to accommodate it.
Given the speed at which CSS is coming down the pipe, we may ~never~ see .png.
Of course . . . that's just my not so humble opinion :-).
In the from of constructive suggestions . . .
think .jpg with a background to match your page . . . or 89A.gif if you can
live with the 255 (one is transparent, remember) colors.
