If you're ready to try running a mail list on your own with a cgi script, 
Mike's MailMachine from http://www.mikesworld.net/ was not all that difficult.

Since it is a *free* script, he does request a credit line on all the 
posts. But, I used to use eGroups and I really like mailmachine instead. It 
took me a while to make it work, but once I figured it out, I turned around 
and installed it in about an hour on another site.
