1) BMP files are no good since they are so large. About the only
browser
that I know that directly supports them is MSIE, why I don't know,
since
someone can use them without knowing what they are doing and create
a
page that is 500 Kilobytes in size and will take forever and ever
and
ever to download, thereby driving away customers, or friends and
visitors.
Ah, Yes, I suspect that the reason is that it is intended for use as part
of your operating system. ie... to show a BMP it just opens the browser
and shows it to you.

It also uses them in the "Active Desktop", a feature that I
keep TURNED OFF! Obviously, these are local files and not downloads.
Actually you need the Active desktop turned on to use a JPG or a GIF on
the desktop, but a BMP can be displayed without it.

To make desktop pictures, I enlarge a JPG (using PhotoShop LE) to 810 (or
1060)px save it as a BMP, and use it for the desktop.
