sidebar and footer includes

Hi all:
I would like to use includes for the sidebar and footer for a huge site that I've maintained for several years.  Having to make changes in the sidebar and footer is so time consuming and using includes would be so time efficient.  I have never played around with ssi before but have been experimenting with it in Dreamweaver.  However the page I'm testing isn't including the includes when I upload everything.  Tech support for this hosting company is lost of course.  Some tell me that ssi is enabled, others don't know, and I've got a trouble ticket open on it.  In the meantime, are there other options that I can use for includes such as cgi scripts or javascripts?  The page I'm playing with is www.sportsteam.com/asicsbasketballshoes.shtml .
