JavaScript is not owned by Netscape. It was created by Netscape, but for
some time it has been an international ECMA standard which browser makers
try to conform to.

Compatibility problems have been primarily been caused by differences in
DOMs, most resulting from Netscape 4's non-compliance with standards, and
Microsoft's propensity for adding proprietary features. Modern browsers -
Mozilla / Netscape 6, IE5+, and Opera 5 - support a very compatible
JavaScript and DOM core.

JavaScript was originally called LiveScript.
