Link to Word docs

Hello, Could someone tell me if it is possible to link to a word document 
that has not been saved as an html file. If so, how I would do this. I've 
not come across this before but my supervisor says she has seen links to 
.doc files.

Please respond directly to me as well as to the list since I only receive 
the digest.
