I was careless in my original post when I said PC; I used it as a 
generic term but the computer I was using was an iMac. And the darn 
file did launch Word, it was definitely not Explorer we were looking 
at, the document could be edited and saved just like any other. And 
my specs prescription is up to date and I didn't have a hangover!! 
Find a friendly Mac owner with MS Word and try it. I don't have it, 
Nisus Writer rules here.

 From a post I had from another helpful person it's clear there are 
differences in what preferences you can set for managing downloads in 
IE5 Mac and IE Win, presumably due to the Mac OS.
