"easy to understand" depends a lot on the person involved.

I thought CSS: The Definitive Guide was easy to understand because I was 
willing to put in the effort to understand it.  Others might think it was 
dry or technical.

Nothing beats going to a bookstore and flipping through a copy to see if 
you like the style (or Amazon if they have the 'look inside' feature for 
the book you are interested in).
