I thoroughly recommend using spacer gifs, but there are many other ways =
too. will add the equivalent of one space of the font size you are =
using. Since HTML ignores white space for the most part, this is an easy =
way to get extra spaces.
Also, CSS formatting rules provide several ways to do this. margin-right, =
margin-left, margin-top, margin-bottom are just a few. I believe those =
are right, but it's been a bit since I've used CSS for anything other than =
rollovers and text alignment.

re my earlier question;
I've just been reminded of the 1x1 pixel gif as a spacer; i think that's
what i need for my table formatting, is it not?
