tbody, thead and tfoot are to separate areas of table data. Just as a =
document as a header, footer, and the body, so should tables.
It's rare to see someone emploring this technique, however, so most don't. =
This, from the W3C:
"Table rows may be grouped into a table head, table foot, and one or more =
table body sections, using the THEAD, TFOOT and TBODY elements, respectivel=
y. This division enables user agents to support scrolling of table bodies =
independently of the table head and foot. When long tables are printed, =
the table head and foot information may be repeated on each page that =
contains table data."

Excuse me if this is a *dumb* question. I've been designing for almost 5
years now and for some reason have never looked into this. What is the
tbody tag used for and why is it even needed?
Thanks,
