You are misunderstanding the way IP address' work a little.

An IP Address is like this

192.168.0.1

Four numbers between 0 and 255 with dots in between. That's it, no
letters.

The other thing is a dns name, such as www.itm-solutions.co.uk which
means the machine called www in the itm-solutions.co.uk domain. This is
purely for the benefit of us humans, as we remember names better than IP
address'. The name simply relates, through a system called DNS (Domain
Name System) to an IP address.

What you are seeing in your log is a mixture of IP address' and names,
because the software doing the logging will try and resolve (get the
name for) the IP address' it gets, or because it was given a name by the
protocol it's monitoring (probably http).

At the end of the day, all the names only mean an IP address anyway
(but the IP address' don't necessarily relate to a name)

If you're running Windows 2000 you can do

nslookup www.itm-solutions.co.uk

(from a command prompt)

to find out what IP address a name means (replace
www.itm-solutions.co.uk with the name you want to check) or you could
use dig on linux.

Hope this helps, tell me if it doesn't :-)

Thanks
Nigel

I've noticed on my counters that IP Addresses after 9/5/2002 are all
showing
numerical values ONLY - no letters whatsoever dispersed among them.
Has
there been an across-the-board change in formatting of IP Addresses or
something? If not, what is causing this?

As an example, check this:
http://www.bennettsfinejewelers.com/cgi-bin/counter/visitors.cgi?date=09/05/

2002
and then this:
http://www.bennettsfinejewelers.com/cgi-bin/counter/visitors.cgi?date=09/05/

2002

I started using a better counter script last year, but these are some
hold-overs from existing sites. Any ideas?

Thanks,
