Merchant Accounts?

I have a client that wants to start selling a couple of things on their web
site.  At first it will only be 2 different items, and then maybe 4-5 later
on.   I suspect at first, they will have a lot of sales (this item is not
available anywhere else) but I'm sure at some point the sales will taper off
to even just a few a month.

What would be the best option for them?  Are there merchant accounts that
only charge per transaction?  They basically need something free or very
cheap.  I know I get spam all the time about "free merchant accounts" but
they immediately go into the trash. I honestly don't know anything about
this....all my other clients already accept credit cards through their
business.
