I agree with Gil. I'm not a client of Ivan's, but I am the client of an
attorney specializing in copyright law and international law who has spent
a lot of time on the net. My attorney's services have cost us only in
money; the peace of mind and protection his contract has given us is more
than worth it.

If you're wondering, "What kinds of things should go in a contract?" then
by all means read Ivan's site. As far as "the basics" go, when I first
consulted with my attorney, he asked me to draw up a list of what was
important to me. These included (as memory serves) that I wanted a
guarantee from the client that whatever material they gave me was
copyrighted by them (or that they had permission to use it), how and when I
wanted to be paid, various promises dealing with how we would make sure the
customer was satisfied with our work, and that any arbitration would be
done in our home county. To this my attorney added a whole host of things
... stuff I wouldn't've thought of. Over the years we've refined it here
and there--adding or modifying articles based on past customer experiences.

Obviously I'm not an attorney, so please only take my advice as a starting
point, not as the final answer. HTH!
