re-vamped site

Thanks to those of you who critiqued 
http://www.execulink.com/~smlib/kdr.html a short while ago.  Your 
suggestions were very helpful, and I have made some changes to the site.  
I think it's ready for another critique.  If you missed out on the first 
critique, please don't hesitate to give me your opinion. 

Here are some changes to look for:

-all font is arial excluding that on the logo
-each page includes a faded photograph in the background
-i've tried to soften things up by adding texture to the navigational 
graphics and sidebar
-headings are simple
-got rid of the peach (the fruit, not the colour!) even though most 
liked it =p
-welcome heading changed to "home"
-logo stays in same place on each page
-portfolio page navigation should run smoothly

Here are a couple questions:

-the leaf graphic in the background of the portfolio page is not as 
washed out as backgrounds on the other pages.  is this ok?
-someone suggested that I optimize my graphics for faster 
loading...unfortunately I have a budget of $0 to work on the site, and 
it seems to cost lots of $$ to use Web Garage.  Does anyone know how I 
can do this myself, or is there a free service?
