I know this can't go on forever, BUT :)

OR, you could create a timeout/timer, with a set time without interaction,
that would cause the central image would flip back to its "before" state.

Again, just an idea, but it could be going too far. That's about it,
without diving into DHTML (where there are a whole sea of options, as far
as layers go).
