"I have a vague feeling in the back of my mind that a gif

comment on this please."
Michael, you're right - a GIF can actually be anywhere
between 2 color and 256 colors and it works best in the base
2 increments (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256 - a 128
color image is 7bpp while 129 is 8bpp). Now I vaguely
remember playing with something called a multipaletted GIF
(up to 2048 colors) a few years ago, but its somewhat less
than widely supported (smirk) and IMHO its better to use a
24bpp image format than some crazy little variant.
