I use Corel Draw and Corel PhotoPaint, version 8 right now. Have for years.
I have PhotoShop and have tired a number of other programs but the Corel
package has it all. The filters that come standard do pretty much
everything I need without having to purchase plugins like Photoshop expects.
I work almost exclusively out of PhotoPaint which is outstanding for web
graphics and it's compression is incredible. I use Draw when I need to work
with Vector graphics fro print usually but do most everything else in Corel
PhotoPaint. It's standard file format is called a cpt which is also a
vector graphic extension.

I'm sure all high end programs are fine and it's good to use what you are
comfortable with. People generally favour what they use or what others have
convinced them is better :-) I read an article in a graphic design magazine
by one of the formost Web Design artists. He used Illustrator and
PhotoShop. He was asked to test drive and compare Corel & Adobe. He was
honest :-) He also admited it was hard to be honest when you are groomed on
a Mac and Adobe. After comparing Corel version 7 and Adobe. He said they
were close in vector graphics but had to admit that Corel PhotoPaint was
outstanding in terms of depth of options and flexibility, superior
compression, standard plugins that are extras with Adobe Photoshop and also
unlimited undo and redo ability not to mention added [rpgrams like 3D Dream
and other programs along with clipart and photos.

So take it for what it's worth.
