fretwork patterns

Hi folks,

I do a bit of fretwork as a hobby. Fretwork is cutting out areas of a flat
sheet so that the contrast between what is missing from the sheet and what
remains of the sheet produces an image. It's like those cartoon drawings
that you see in newspapers of largish, angular blocks of black on white. [If
anyone knows what that style of drawing is I would love to know as it would
give me a tag to search by].

So, why I am posting here is:

Does anyone know of a sequence of steps in photoshop [I got 6.0] that might
get and approximation of that effect from photographs. What would your
intuition say to have a play with.
