Peter,
Cut some lengths of 2mm wire and paint them?

Ha ha ha ha, I'm so funny sometimes :-)

Have a look at
http://www.madnessinc.com/graphicallychallenged/chrome.htm
for a Micrografx Picture Publisher tutorial on coloured metal
effects (chrome). See how it is done and use equivalent
techniques in your favourite paint program.

http://www.madnessinc.com/graphicallychallenged/Tutorials.htm
is a list of all the tutorials, some others may be applicable.

http://www.theboondocks.org/p2/p2.htm
has a tutorial that starts with a shiny chrome bar, use colour
to suit your needs, basic technique will still be good.

A range of apps have tutorials here
http://www.grafx-design.com/tutorials.html

Some that should help are
http://www.grafx-design.com/01psp.html 3D buttons, if long and thin would be
bars.
http://www.grafx-design.com/09psp.html Gold bars and buttons
http://www.grafx-design.com/19psp.html 3D brushed metal buttons (long and
thin?)

Hope that helps.
