This sounds highly suspect to me. WHY do you have to work at his home? Does he supervise everything you are doing? Is he afraid you are ripping him off? Or does he figure he will get free lessons on site design while you are there? This guy sounds extremely creepy to me and I would not have taken a job like this under any circumstances. If you pack it in, don't feel bad, and don't look back. Some clients just are going to be a pain and it isn't YOUR fault when things don't work out. As a side note: I have a lot of clients who wish to do have access to make 'minor' changes to their sites. Often they break things as you described. Before they get their hands on the site, I make sure I have a full backup! Then if something breaks, it is easily fixed. Good luck Eliza!
