I am reading a book at this time called "XML in action, Web Technology."
The best reason I can give you that I have found so far for learning XML is
this:

HTML is about displaying information.  XML is about describing information.
XML is way flexible in that you can write your own tags describing the
content of a page rather than HTML which uses tags to describe the format of
a page.  You are not locked into one size fits all.

http://www.xml.com  has loads of info.
