Need help with a gradient.

I am looking for a relatively easy way to apply a gradient to an irregular
shape and have the gradient distributed evenly  on the whole shape.  I can
do squares, rectangles and circles all day but when I try to apply one to a
shape with a profile like a flower vase, some parts are fine but others are
not - either too light or dark depending on where I stop the gradient.
