PhotoImpact & dropping backgrounds

Thanks for the info on where to get Photo Impact and also tutorials.  Can
anyone using PI tell me if this software can drop out backgrounds.  I'm
still struggling with this in PS5 and the only plugin software that I've
been told can do it easily is Mask Pro from http://www.extensis.com/ which
costs $299.95 and is way out of my budget.  If PI can't do this, can anyone
suggest any shareware or low cost software that will.
