I sometimes get the same. If it happens with a color photo, I use my editor
(for scanning, Ulead PhotoImpact) and convert the scanned Untitled image
into an indexed 256-color image. *Sometimes* that takes care of it. If not,
I try with a different editor. As I said, I am not an expert by any means at
scanning, but have had my share of frustrations with them. If you have any
problem images, feel free to email them to me and I'll see if I can fix them
up. I have found that the "checkerboard" look only happens when scanning off
glossy paper.
