As long as PC's still come configured to display at 640x480, as long as
people use 14" monitors, and as long as eyesight tends to fail as we get
older, people will run their displays at 640x480.  Maybe when everyone uses
19" and larger monitors we won't have to worry about this.  And then, people
will be viewing websites with cell phones, toasters and things we haven't
even though of.  Personally, I think we'll just need to come up with a way
to make things look as good as possible in any configuration.  Kinda like
now.
