Hi, folks, and thanks for replying directly (and, in a couple of cases, to the list as well).

OK, many thanks for the excellent advice you all gave. In the end, I used a combination of the advice I received, to
achieve the result required:

1. Gamma correct image to your jormal preference (I use 1.5).
2. Reduce number of colours to two (2) using Error Diffusion
(the Floyd-Stienburg model). Since the image is going to
be vastly reduced in size, the mottling effect the diffusion
    produces doesn't matter.
3. increase the number of colours to 16M (16 million).
4. Set the foreground colour to white, the background colour to
whatever colour you want (I used a 'web-safe' colour), and
using the colour replacement tool, replace the background
colour. Viola, one duo-colour image in varying factors of mottle.
5. Reduce the image to the required dimentions (I reduced an
image of roughly 437x421 to 78x75; it was still easy enough
to discern the features of the picture).

The resulting image was then copied and pasted into another (much larger) image, with similarly treated images, to
produce a masthead image, which was then trimmed to size, saved, and inserted into the page in question. When it goes
live, I'll drop you the URL, so that you have an idea of what I'm on about, if you like?

Oh, those who mentioned Fireworks, yes, I've got that too, but for messing around with imagees, my personal feeling is
that PSP does a much better job. I tend to use FW for image creation, rather than image manipulation!

Again, thanks for your help and advice, the list wins again!

Best regards,

Roger Stenning
