"Definitly the best all purpose font for buttons is Arial.
Best readability at all resolutions, good anti-aliasing and
scales well."

Actually all of the Microsoft default fonts work well,
as do their new 'web fonts' that they insist on installing
with Explorer (you can get them separately at
www.microsoft.com/typography )

Verdana is nice if a bit 'mechanical', Trebuchet is
better (a somewhat happier sans), and Georgia looks great
for a serifed font (I use it on my desktop).

But as a word of note, you don't have to rely solely on
the type designer for readability if you do your text in a
program like Illustrator you can tweak the spacing between
the letters (no formula just what looks best) -
letterspacing and wordspacing is equally important to
readability (especially at small point sizes on onscreen
display). Well at least for everything except script fonts.
